Meet Sarah Kathryn of Creatiate. I LOVE her handmade stamps - check out the shop and think about how perfectly these stamps would suit handmade wrapping paper, cards and gift tags. Also, Sarah Kathryn's answer for how she celebrates special occasions is. the best. Welcome, and enjoy!
Tell us about your business
Creatiate is a creative brand born from the idea that creating is an insatiable part of our lives. Some people have just got to make! Through Creatiate & Creatiate Home, I design + create rubber stamps & original block prints.
How did you get started?
I jumped into the creative business feet first. I started designing & developing my rubber stamp line in hopes of helping with the monthly bills while I was a full-time nanny. Once I started designing, I was addicted to creating & determined to make Creatiate a full-time business.
The gal/guy behind the business - Tell us about yourself, how do you spend your Saturday mornings, a little glimpse into your life, your family etc.
I have lived all over the US - I grew up in New Jersey, lived for a while in Arizona & now finally settling into life in Virginia with my husband & my golden retriever, Ollie. We are lovers of nature and spend as much time outdoors as possible. I am a lover of classic literature, so I spend most weekends with my nose in a novel or trying to explore our new local area with my husband.
What inspires you? Where does your creativity come from?
I love vintage Scandinavian & modern mid-century design. That being said, I love incorporating all different types of culture that I've encountered into my simplistic designs. My creativity is sparked in all kinds of odd ways - browsing garage sales & thrift stores, hiking in the VA mountains, or visiting the Smithsonian museums in Washington DC.
I am always looking for ways to expand and improve my business, and I would really like to enroll in typography & ceramics classes to add these skills into my designs & products at Creatiate. I would also love to improve my digital design skills - I confess to using a primitive graphic design program that I learned mostly by trial-and-error.
What is the best gift you have ever given or received?
The best gift I've received is the support of my husband, who has never asked me to try to be someone that I'm not.
How do you celebrate special occasions?
What do you do when you make time for yourself (you and only you)
When I am totally alone, I spend a lot of time watching Star Trek reruns while scribbling notes, design doodles & new business ideas into a giant notebook. I'm also a bit of a Pinterest/Etsy addict, browsing handmade items that inspire me & make me say "YES."
